We Grow
to Zero
Dear Valued Guests,
At Sofia Balkan Palace, we strive to make a positive impact on the environment and offer our exceptional hospitality sustainably. By choosing a hotel owned or operated by The Knossians, you have selected a partner that shares your values.
Our Vision
Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we are dedicated to ensuring that our actions contribute meaningfully to addressing the global challenge of Climate Change. In particular, we focus on reducing carbon emissions and energy usage, recognizing the significant role the hotel sector plays in global emissions.
We’re excited to share with you some of the meaningful steps we’re taking toward sustainability, particularly in our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.
Our Target
We have set ambitious target to reduce our carbon footprint and Grow to Zero. By 2030, we aim for a 46% reduction in emissions, compared to our 2019 baseline, from our owned and managed properties (Scope 1 & 2 GHG emissions, and Scope 3 FERA emissions), following science-based guidelines and aligning with the objectives of Sustainable Hospitality. This target is consistent with climate science and the Paris Agreement.
Our Actions to Carbon Neutrality
At Sofia Balkan Palace, we are upgrading our energy infrastructure to decarbonize our services. We prioritize eco-friendly practices to further mitigate our environmental impact and strive for societal net-zero emissions by offsetting residual (unavoidable) emissions in partnership with our valued guests.
To offset the unavoidable emissions, we are investing in certified carbon offsetting projects, and we use our voice to drive change by adopting a collaborative and equitable approach to carbon neutrality.
Our Call
Addressing Climate Change is a collective responsibility that falls upon all of us. By accepting to offset the residual carbon footprint that is associated with your own accommodation at the Sofia Balkan Palace, you’re on-boarding our sustainability journey.
Let’s Grow to Zero, together.
Warm regards,
The Sofia Balkan Palace

Carbon offsets are tokens representing greenhouse gases “avoided”, “reduced” or “removed” from the atmosphere.
Carbon offsetting allows corporates and individuals to compensate for their emissions, by supporting projects that avoid, reduce or remove emissions elsewhere.
What is “carbon offsetting”?
Carbon offsets are tokens representing greenhouse gases “avoided”, “reduced” or “removed” from the atmosphere.
Carbon offsetting allows corporates and individuals to compensate for their emissions, by supporting projects that avoid, reduce or remove emissions elsewhere.
Does this mean that the guests are proposed to be charged the hotel’s emissions?
No. Our carbon offsetting value proposition is not a substitute for the hotel’s decarbonization.
At Sofia Balkan Palace, we are investing in the upgrade of energy infrastructure to reduce our carbon footprint and following eco-friendly practices to further mitigate our environmental impact. We aim for a 46% reduction in emissions by 2030, compared to our 2019 baseline, in alignment with the objectives of Sustainable Hospitality, Climate Science and the Paris Agreement.
Despite our efforts to offer our exceptional hospitality sustainably, there are residual (unavoidable) emissions that are related exclusively to the type of room, the number of guests and the number of nights of your stay. We welcome you to participate, of you so wish, in addressing equitably the challenge of Climate Change.
Where are you proposing to offset the CO2 emissions that I generate in Bulgaria?
Although Climate Change is a global challenge and every Kg of CO2 avoided, reduced, or removed from the atmosphere anywhere in the world would be important, we are inviting you to offset such CO2 emissions in Bulgaria from a carbon reduction project that is in Svilosa, 235 Km far from Sofia Balkan Palace by car.
Who certifies the project that you propose?
The project was developed with the support of the World Bank (Prototype Carbon Fund) and was registered as a Joint Implementation Project. It demonstrates the viability of biomass plants which support improved energy security, improved air quality, alternative sustainable energy future, improved local livelihoods and sustainable renewable energy industry development.
The project’s carbon reduction is certified by The Gold Standard, one of the most reputable MRVs globally that operates according to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The project is verified against the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, and in particular:

- Decent Work and Economic Growth [picture]

Why is this important to me?
Leisure and Travel represents 8% of global GHG emissions and Hotels represent 1% of global GHG emissions. By accepting to offset the residual carbon footprint that is associated with your own accommodation at the Sofia Balkan Palace, you are addressing equitably the global challenge of Climate Change and contributing towards societal net zero.
